This post is in collaboration with Bed Bath & Beyond. I received compensation, but all opinions are my own.
2018 was a crazy year for me. I felt completely unorganized. Most of this had to do with the fact that so many things were happening, and I didn’t have time to sit down and reorganize, but in 2019 I have worked hard to change that. I started with my kitchen because that’s where I have the majority of items and I spend the most time in there. When I revealed my kitchen organization on the blog you all loved it. It was actually one of my highest trafficked blogs, so I think it’s safe to say that you are interested in reorganization.
The next area that needed to be tackled was my closet. This is an area where things had gotten out of hand. I tried to reorganize a few times, but after a few weeks went by I would be back to the same spot, so when I started this project I tried to be mindful of the clothes that I did have and how I was organizing them. This is where Bed Bath & Beyond comes in. I realized the area I need the most help was in how I was arranging things. What my drawers lacked was separation. I found dividers at their store that helped me separate my drawers into three sections. I found these sections to be super helpful when I am putting away my clothes. I can’t let myself just shove my clothes into the drawer. I have to fold the items neatly and place them where they belong.
Today I am sharing the seven-step process that I went through when I started to reorganizing. This process helped me really think through the process, and I hope it will help you too.
Gather all of your items and put them into one place.
Take each item, look at it and sort it into a pile. The three collections I had were the keep pile, sell online and giveaway. It is crucial here to really think about the items you are keeping. Think back on the previous year. Did you wear the piece? Try it on. How does it make you feel? Is it uncomfortable? Does it not make you feel your best? Only keep the items that you genuinely love and use. I have become much more of a minimalist when it comes to clothes over the past year. I am starting to really realize quality is much more important than quantity.
Once you have your keep pile organize it into groups. Bras, underwear, shirt, jeans, etc.
Measure your drawers, count how many hanging items you have and head to Bed, Bath & Beyond to pick out your organizational pieces. I found this bamboo drawer separator that helps keep my clothes neat and organize.
Then, decide which items you will hang up and which you will fold. I have room in my closet for these gorgeous wood hangers from Bed, Bath & Beyond, but if you have less space, you can opt of felt hangers that will give you more hanging space.
Start to place your items on hangers or in drawers.
Now enjoy your newly organized closet. Trust me you are going to love having a specific place for each item, and you will definitely enjoy some of the new found room you have.
Here are a few additional tips to consider when organizing your closet:
Fold all of your items the same way and get in the habit of this when you are doing your laundry.
Give everything a place. This is also helpful when you are putting away your clothes. You will not be wasting any time thinking of where to put it.
Only keep out what you are wearing that season. I take my summer clothes and put them into storage totes during the winter and store them in my crawl space. This also makes me feel excited about my wardrobe because it seems newish since I haven’t seen it for a season.
I hope these tips help you feel inspired to get organized in 2019. I genuinely think getting arranged has improved my life feel so much less stressful this year. If you have any questions or if you want more organization tips to leave me a comment below.
